Applying 'their' wisdom to 'our' craft

First, only uneducated practitioners of these disciplines would ever skip the create phase.

Hardly any professional director skips story boarding. No blockbuster video game designer saves on concept art. (On the contrary, he prides himself on his game's art and publishes it in a book). Amongst screenwriters it is well known that if you start writing too early, you get stuck on words, resulting in scenes that won't make any sense.

With all of these disciplines, skipping the create phase is frowned upon. Professionals have the discipline and patience to wait before they dive in to the 'cool' part, the part where you build it, write it, film it, make it, etc.

The second thing to note is astounding. All these create phases have one thing in common: they do not involve the use of technology. Storyboards are made with pencil and paper, screenwriters don't touch the keyboard for months, graphic designers sketch and video game designers hire concept artists who use 'old fashioned' pen, ink, paint and paper.
